Divi-Dead Review

ddsmall.jpgDivi-Dead (or Dividead) is a visual novel that could be classified as adult horror. Ranmaru is plagued with an unknown illness, and his progress facing it lead his uncle to move it to a new school which is the theatre of mysterious events and the host for a tribe of strange characters. Ranmaru soons discovers that his uncle had an idea in mind when placing him in this school: he is to investigate secretly those strange events and report them.He will soon be confronted with horror and supernatural.

While Dividead is a fairly old game (1998), it hasn't aged that much and is very enjoyable to play. The graphics are really outstanding, would it be for the characters or the various locations of the school, and support very well the dark and scary atmosphere. The plot is very well thought out, and the player is very progressively pushed from what looks to be a normal school into a magical world, each discovery bringing him deeper inside this world and each event giving a few more clues about what is really happening around him.

In terms of interface, in addition to the classic visual novel layout of text and questions, Dividead features a map of the school that the main character has drawnand the player can use to navigate in the buildings, somehow similar to the mansion's map in Nocturnal Illusions. Note the map is not translated to english, however a few tries will give all the necessary information to the player, and you can end up drawing the map yourself which will place you a little more in the steps of your character.

The adult content in Dividead is not the primary focus of the game, but still very well integrated in the story. The scenes are fairly softcore, most of their erotic character coming from the situation that lead to them, yet the graphics are, again, of outstanding quality.

There are many possible endings a lot of which are bad or semi-bad, and while most of the first part can be considered scary and mysterious, the end of the story definitely fits the horror style.

The main issue with the game is quite similar to Nocturnal Illusions', to which it has not only borrowed the map navigation. Once again, the freedom offered by the map is only on the paper: at some stages, the story won't move forward until you go to a specific location to trigger a specific event. You can still visit the whole school,  but nothing will happen in any other location than the one where something is supposed to happen, which will often result, if the hints you got from the story were not enough, in having to visit all places in a systematic manner until you find where something is supposed to happen.

Still, that doesn't make Divi-dead a bad game, far from it, and the plot, atmosphere and horror mix definitely make it worth playing.
