Nocturnal Illusions starts with a set up of a classical horror movie. The main character, Shinichi, is caught in a storm and ends up in a a freaky mansion. As he starts to explore it and chat with its hosts, he soon realizesthe world he stepped in is somewhat different from the one he knows : the mansion is inhabitted by ghosts, fantastic creatures, apparitions, or others like him that seem to have forgotten all about their past.
Nocturnal Illusion is abandonware and freely downloadable (see below).
What makes Nocturnal Illusions an enjoyable classic is its atmosphere. Mystery is everywhere, most of the mansion's inhabitants clearly hide secrets, and the main character often finds himself looking back his shoulder wondering what was that noise, contributing to a somewhat-scary environment, and giving you the job to solve all those riddles.
The game interface features an interactive map of the mansion and its garden. You can basically wander around the mansion by chosing a location, with some events and actions available depending on where you are and what you have already explored.

The H-scenes range from fairly softcore to very hardcode, the latter including bondage scenes, or scenes featuring sex with a demon, a vampiress or a siren.
Although the graffics have aged, the game's atmosphere and your detective role make it quite entertaining, and the individual characters' stories include some interesting ones. The main drawback of Nocturnal Illusions is the fact that your freedom in the mansion is only fictive : basically, at some stages of the game, you need to visit a certain place and make the right action for any other new events or encounters to trigger. This sometimes results in the need to loop through all places, do all available actions to make sure you didn't forget any, until you find the right one, and then start again if the tip you got wasn't good enough to hint you directly to the right location. You can of course bypass this problem by playing with a walkthrough (one is listed below) close by, but this takes away what made the user interface original. What this also reveals is that the story is in fact quite linear, your decisions only slightly impacting the overall plot until the end where the game may end up in 11 different endings.
